India sourcing, quick answers
- What is India best at for Australian buyers?
- Metal-intensive work. Ferrous and non-ferrous castings, drop and closed-die forgings, machined castings, pumps, valves and fittings, pressed and fabricated steel, and general engineering components. India also has a large toolroom and pattern-making base supporting those foundries.
- Does the Australia, India trade agreement reduce import duty?
- The Australia, India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement provides preferential tariff treatment on eligible goods of Indian origin where the origin rules for the tariff classification are satisfied and the documentation is in order. Eligibility is assessed line by line against the tariff code, not by country alone.
- How does India compare with China for castings?
- India's foundry sector is deep and competitive on ferrous castings and forgings, particularly at medium volumes and larger part sizes. China generally holds the advantage where tooling iteration speed and a dense cluster of secondary processes matter more, such as tooled plastic parts and consumer hardware.
- How do you control quality on Indian suppliers?
- Supplier audit before placement, first-article approval against the drawing, coordinate measuring machine reporting on critical dimensions, and material traceability back to the mill or the melt where the part warrants it. Supplier non-disclosure agreements and a master service agreement with quality checkpoints apply as they do in every region.

Sourcing from India
India is where we look for metal. Castings, forgings, machined castings, valves, pumps and steel-intensive fabricated parts, backed by a foundry and toolroom base that has been supplying western engineering customers for decades.
/ What India is strong in
Castings and forgings.
Grey and ductile iron, steel and stainless castings, investment castings, and drop and closed-die forgings, with pattern-making and toolrooms attached to the foundry clusters. Medium volumes and larger part sizes are handled comfortably, and machining of the casting is frequently done in the same group. See casting and forging sourcing.
Pumps, valves and fittings.
India has a long-established industry in flow-control and general engineering products supplying international markets. For replacement parts, wear components and pressure-containing hardware, the capability and the metallurgical documentation are generally there.
Steel-intensive fabrication.
Pressed, welded and machined steel assemblies, structural components and heavier weldments. Combined with domestic steel production, that makes India a strong option for parts where raw material is a large share of the cost. See steel and aluminium supply and raw material sourcing.
/ Freight and duty
Routes, and the ECTA question.
Cargo typically leaves through Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Kolkata, usually transhipping through Singapore, Port Klang or Colombo before reaching the Australian east coast, with more direct options into Fremantle from the west coast Indian ports. Services are less frequent than the China trades and the sea leg is longer, so ordering rhythm matters more than spot speed.
The Australia, India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement provides preferential tariff treatment on eligible goods of Indian origin, subject to the origin rules for that tariff classification and correct documentation at the border. On heavy metal parts, the duty position can move the landed cost enough to change the sourcing decision, so we settle the classification before we shortlist suppliers.
We do not publish duty rates or transit times on this page. Both depend on your specific part and the route booked, so we confirm the classification and the schedule for your product and show them in your landed cost.
/ Quality norms
Metallurgy and traceability.
The Indian foundry and forging sector is used to export documentation. On metal parts the things that matter are the melt and heat-treatment records, chemical and mechanical test reports, non-destructive testing where the part calls for it, and traceability from the certificate back to the specific batch. English-language engineering correspondence is standard, which makes drawing queries and deviation requests faster to resolve.
Variation between suppliers is still wide, so we treat certification as a filter and the audit as the evidence. First-article approval against the drawing, coordinate measuring machine reporting on critical dimensions, supplier non-disclosure agreements, and a master service agreement with quality checkpoints. Critical parts are inspected in Australia before release, and McIver Engineering in Sydney handles onshore finishing or rework where a job needs it. See ISO 9001 vs ISO 13485 suppliers.

What we have personally audited.
We claim only the audits we have done ourselves. The audit photography we publish today is from our China supplier visits, shown on the about page.
Our published audit photography is from China, so we make no site visit claim for India here. On an Indian casting or forging program we apply the same controls we use elsewhere: material certificates where required, first article approval, dimensional reporting and inspection matched to how critical the part is.
