Tooling and moulding depth.

China's advantage is not simply hourly rate. It is that a moulder, a tool shop, a plater and a packaging supplier all sit inside the same industrial cluster, so a tooling revision takes days rather than a shipping cycle. Castings, forgings and metalwork.

Sand casting, investment casting, die casting, drop forging and heavy fabrication are all available at volumes Australia rarely runs. Foundries here are used to working to a drawing and a material spec, and secondary machining is normally in the same group or a short truck ride away. Ocean freight space from China into Australia and New Zealand is exceptionally tight through September 2026. Typhoon-driven congestion at Chinese ports and multiple blank sailings have pulled capacity out of the trade, and the effect compounds around the two holiday peaks.

Book four to five weeks ahead around Mid-Autumn Festival, 25 to 27 September, and Golden Week, 1 to 7 October. Tariffs, ChAFTA and landed cost.

Goods of Chinese origin may be eligible for preferential treatment under the China, Australia Free Trade Agreement where the origin rules for that tariff classification are met and the paperwork is correct at the border. Eligibility is decided line by line against the tariff code, not by the country on the invoice, so the classification work belongs at quoting stage rather than at the wharf.

Australia also maintains anti-dumping and countervailing measures on a range of imported goods, and some of those measures touch commodity metal products. Whether a specific part falls inside a measure depends on the goods description in the relevant notice, so we check it before committing to a supplier rather than after.

We do not publish duty rates, because the correct rate depends on the tariff classification of your specific part and on measures in force at the time you import. What certification actually tells you.

ISO 9001 is close to universal among Chinese export factories, which makes it a filter rather than a differentiator. What separates a good supplier from an average one is whether the quality system is used: whether first-article reports are real, whether the coordinate measuring machine is calibrated and staffed, whether material certificates trace back to the mill, and whether the factory pushes back on a drawing that cannot be made as drawn.
