- What is a hybrid manufacturing program?
- A hybrid program deliberately splits a build between an overseas factory (usually for volume, tooling-heavy or labour-heavy work) and an Australian workshop (usually for finishing, critical machining, assembly or IP-sensitive steps). The goal is to get offshore economics without offshore risk on the parts that matter.
- When does a hybrid make sense?
- When one or more of these apply: some parts are IP-sensitive; some parts need short lead times you cannot get by sea; final QC needs to happen onshore; assembly involves Australian-sourced components; or the customer requires a Made-in-Australia final label on a partially-imported product.
- Doesn't splitting cost more?
- It can, and often it saves money. Splitting removes marginal risk (rework, expedite freight, quality holds) that would otherwise blow up the offshore cost model. The right split is the one where each step happens at the workshop best suited to it.

Offshore vs onshore manufacturing: when a hybrid program wins
The offshore vs onshore debate is usually framed as a binary. It is not. The best programs we run are hybrid: high-volume, tooling-heavy work overseas, critical or IP-sensitive steps onshore. Here is how to design one.
Send offshore
- • High-volume repeat work with stable specs.
- • Tooling-heavy processes (injection moulding, die casting, forging).
- • Labour-heavy assembly with commodity components.
- • Parts where six to ten weeks of lead time is acceptable.
Keep onshore
- • IP-sensitive components (proprietary geometry, controlled tech data).
- • Critical machining features that cannot afford a two-week rework loop.
- • Final QC and inspection before parts go to the customer.
- • Assembly using Australian-sourced sub-components.
- • Urgent site-down or spare part production.
